The President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, has expressed his excitement at former President John Mahama’s vision, believing that it will greatly contribute to the development of football in the country.
The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress recently announced that his future government will collaborate with the domestic football governing body (GFA) to revamp Ghanaian football following the disappointing performance of the Black Stars at AFCON 2023.
He also emphasized the need to nurture local players and provide them with opportunities to join the right domestic clubs in order to gain valuable exposure before seeking opportunities abroad.
During a press conference in Kumasi, Kurt Okraku welcomed the former President’s vision for Ghanaian football.
“I am delighted that former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed his desire to support our local players in their quest for national recognition,” he stated.
Mr. Okraku also revealed that proposals have been submitted to the current government for strategic interventions that would encourage players to stay within the local football scene for longer periods.
“The policies we have implemented are a clear indication of our belief that with the right level of investment, our leagues will flourish. When our leagues thrive, our players will be content, and they will be more inclined to stay for longer periods,” he explained.
“In our efforts to make this a reality, we have presented proposals to the government for strategic interventions that will provide our players with increased financial incentives to stay longer and gain recognition from national team selectors, with the aim of building strong national teams. I am confident that the government will support our initiative,” he added.
