Following Ghana’s poor performance in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has suggested a revamp of the national football team by prioritizing the inclusion of local players.
Mahama emphasized the need to build the core of the Black Stars around domestic players, highlighting their history of playing together as a cohesive foundation for the team. He also recommended the addition of some foreign players to complement the squad and improve overall performance.
“The core of the Black Stars must be made of domestic players who have played together for a long time. We keep camping them and they keep practicing together.
When we are going to a competition, we can bring some of the foreign players to join the domestic players. You will see that we will have a better team, so we are going to overhaul Ghana football in collaboration with the Ghana Football Association,” he stated.
The Black Stars’ campaign in the AFCON got off to a rocky start with a defeat against Cape Verde and two draws against Egypt and Mozambique. The disappointing results ultimately led to the dismissal of head coach Chris Hughton.
