I’m surprised – GFA exco member Frederick Acheampong on Otto Addo’s Black Stars job links

Reports suggest that Otto Addo is the front runner in the race to become the new coach of the Black Stars.

However, this has come as a surprise to Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association, Fredrick Acheampong, who claims to be unaware of where these reports are coming from.

Acheampong expressed astonishment at the reports, emphasizing that the responsibility of appointing the coach lies with the FA and not the search committee.

Following the disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which led to the dismissal of the previous coaching staff, the Black Stars have been without a permanent coach.

The team’s failure to advance beyond the group stages at the tournament has left a vacancy for the coaching position.

Acheampong clarified, “The appointment of the coach does not even stop with the search committee. This is from our level (The Executive Committee). The decision we made was that the search committee should draw up a shortlist of three coaches, so I was surprised to hear that Otto Addo is leading the race as if the search committee are in charge to appoint us a coach.”

He added, “The search committee are expected to bring three coaches to the Executive Council for further discussions and checks before one person will be chosen amongst the three.”

Notably, Otto Addo previously took charge of the Black Stars in 2022 and successfully guided Ghana to qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a victory over Nigeria in the final playoff round.

However, following the team’s early exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Addo stepped down from the role. Subsequently, the Ghana FA appointed coach Chris Hughton to take charge of the Black Stars, but the team failed to meet expectations under his leadership.
