Neil Armstrong Mortagbe, a former Managing Director of Hearts of Oak, believes that Ghana needs a new coach who can quickly bring out the best in the talented players in the country.

Following the dismissal of coach Chris Hughton after Ghana’s disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, the search for a new coach has become a top priority.

Speaking to Graphic Sports about the qualities the new Black Stars head coach should possess, Mortagbe emphasized the need for a coach who can understand the team quickly and bring out the best in the talented players.

“We want a coach who can quickly put his finger on the pulse of the team and ascertain what it would take to get the best out of the talents that we have in the team,” Mortagbe said. “A coach who would get the players to build a very strong mentality pregnant with the hunger for success. These are the key ingredients that would get our talented players to deliver at the level that their talents deserve.”

Ghana’s disappointing performance in the tournament saw them finish third in a group that included Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. The Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde and managed back-to-back 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique, leading to their elimination from the tournament at the group stage.

This marks the second successive tournament where the Black Stars have exited at the group stages without registering a win, adding to the country’s 42-year wait for its fifth AFCON title.
