Alhassan Suhuyini, the Member of Parliament for Tamale North, has made a bold statement regarding the Black Stars’ participation in major tournaments, claiming that Ghana does not benefit from it.
Backing his claim, Suhuyini pointed out that Ghana spent over three million dollars in three group stage matches without winning any of them and failing in Ivory Coast.
When the Sports Minister disclosed the budget allocated for the tournament (over $8.5 million) in Parliament, the former journalist expressed his disapproval, stating that Ghana should not be spending such large amounts on what he describes as unproductive Black Stars.
“It is no longer a benefit for Ghana for the Black Stars to participate in an Africa Cup of Nations, especially when we are spending over US$3 million,” Suhuyini said. “Did we have to spend over US$3 million for people to build contacts? Is this what is worth over 3 million that has been spent?”
Ghana failed to advance to the Round of 16 after finishing third in a group that included Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.
The Black Stars suffered a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde and two consecutive 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique, sealing their elimination from the tournament.
