Former Minister for Youth and Sports, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has revealed his grand plans for a major transformation of Ghanaian sports by the year 2025, should the NDC come into power.

The announcement follows the disappointing exit of the Black Stars from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2023, and concerns about the declining state of the domestic league under the leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku.

Vanderpuye, in an interview with Citi Sports, expressed his disappointment at the current state of Ghanaian football, blaming the lack of determination from the current government to address these issues.

He stated, “I know this particular government will not have the willpower to undertake this serious and drastic decision with regard to our football.”

In his ambitious plans, Vanderpuye promised a complete overhaul of Ghanaian sports by 2025, with a particular focus on football and the management of the leagues in the country.

He stated, “We will change how our leagues are run in the country. I am not bragging, but for the little discussions we’ve had on the way forward for our sports, I believe our manifesto will have a clear-cut plan for Ghanaian football.”

Ghana’s exit in the group stage of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cote d’Ivoire has highlighted the issues within the national team. The Black Stars have now gone over 40 years without a trophy since their last in 1982.

Following the sacking of Chris Hughton, a five-member committee led by Vice President Mark Addo has been appointed to search for a new coach for the Black Stars.
