Samira Suleman, a Black Queens forward, has come forward with the revelation that some of her teammates were compelled to retire due to unpaid bonuses dating back to 2016.

This disclosure comes after the team famously protested at the Ministry of Sports in 2016 over unpaid bonuses of about $25,000 per player.

The bonuses were for their involvement in various competitions, including the 2016 African Women’s Cup of Nations, 2016 Rio Olympic qualifiers, and the 2015 All-African Games, where the Queens clinched gold.

Suleman took to social media to share her sentiments about the situation, stating that “This retired a lot of players.”

Furthermore, the current Black Queens are also reportedly owed outstanding bonuses for their qualification games for the African Women’s Cup of Nations and the 2024 Olympic Games. Each player is owed a reported $7,500, despite their bonuses being slashed by 50%.

Suleman, who had previously criticized the Ghana Football Association in 2018 over their handling of the team compared to the Black Stars, has not played for the Black Queens since then.

This revelation sheds light on the challenges faced by women footballers in Ghana and serves as a reminder of the importance of fair and timely compensation for athletes.
