The National Sports Authority’s board chairman, Seth Panwun, has expressed his belief that coaching is not the primary issue for the Black Stars.
After the disappointing AFCON performance, Chris Hughton and his technical staff were sacked, and a committee was established to find their replacements. However, Panwun is calling for more extensive changes within the Ghana Football Association.
He stated, “Sacking the coach is not the fundamental problem with the Black Stars. I think that it should go beyond that. I think we should also move beyond the technical team aspect. Even the management that is leading the front should have also been reshuffled or taken out so that other hands and minds can also come on board to help.”
Ghana’s failure to advance to the Round of 16 was a result of finishing third in a group with Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. The Black Stars were defeated 2-1 by Cape Verde and had back-to-back 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique, resulting in their elimination from the tournament.
This marks the second consecutive tournament in which the Black Stars have been eliminated in the group stages without securing a win, extending the country’s wait for its fifth AFCON title to 42 years.
