Premier League clubs, Chelsea and Newcastle United, have paid tribute to the late Christian Atsu on the one year anniversary of his tragic passing.
Once a former Ghanaian international, Atsu was confirmed dead following a deadly earthquake in Turkey. The heartbreaking event, which happened a year ago, claimed many lives.
On February 6 of 2024, Newcastle United posted a touching message on Twitter saying, “One year ago we sadly lost Christian Atsu in the most tragic of circumstances. An incredible person who is fondly remembered by everyone at Newcastle United. Our thoughts are forever with Christian’s family and friends.”
Similarly, Chelsea FC also took to Twitter to express their condolences, saying “One year ago today we tragically lost Christian Atsu. Our thoughts will always remain with Christian’s family and friends.”
Shortly before the earthquake in Turkey, Atsu was scheduled to leave but opted to stay with the club after scoring the winning goal in a match. Unfortunately, despite hopes of finding him alive under the rubble, Atsu was discovered to have tragically passed away. His body was later repatriated to Ghana where emotional observances and a state-assisted funeral were held in his honor.
Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo lamented the loss, saying “Football has lost one of its finest ambassadors.” The late Atsu had an impressive football career, representing Ghana in 69 matches with 9 goals to his name.
Despite the tragic loss, Atsu’s achievements on and off the field were celebrated. He was named the Best Player of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, and was also a passionate ambassador for the charity Arms Around The Child.
The organization praised him as the “main benefactor” of a school in Ghana that supports abandoned children, orphans, the chronically ill, and trafficking survivors, highlighting his humble beginnings and his efforts to help others.
