Renowned Ghana Premier League figure, Charles Taylor, has proposed the idea of forming a coaching team made up of Ghanaian football legends Michael Essien and Laryea Kingston to take charge of the Black Stars.
The search for a new coach for the Black Stars has attracted a lot of attention, with an increasing call for a former footballer to lead the national team.
Charles Taylor, speaking on Angel TV, emphasized the importance of appointing a capable coach for the team.
Taylor expressed doubt about the ability of a local coach to handle the Black Stars, stating that the role requires someone with strength and commitment.
He stressed that Ghanaians are primarily concerned with bringing in a high-quality coach to improve the team’s performance.
According to the former Hearts of Oak forward, individuals like Michael Essien possess the qualities needed to lead the team, and adding Laryea Kingston to the coaching staff would further enhance the team’s prospects.
“No local coach can handle the team, but some individuals can help us. Michael Essien, for instance, is one of the people who can assist us. The players in the Black Stars will support him. If you add Laryea to the team, it will benefit us,” he said.
“If the likes of Michael Essien, Laryea Kingston, and Stephen Appiah can lead the team, then they should be appointed. These are the individuals who can effectively manage the team. The appointment of these figures will undoubtedly bring about positive changes in Ghanaian football,” Taylor stated.
The Ghana Football Association made the decision to part ways with Chris Hughton on January 24, 2024, following the Black Stars’ disappointing performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Failing to secure a victory, the team exited the tournament after two draws and one loss in Group B, including a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde in the opening game and 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique in the subsequent matches.
This marks the second consecutive group stage exit for the Black Stars in the AFCON, replicating their fate in the 2021 edition.
