The Black Stars of Ghana have experienced a significant decline in the February FIFA World Rankings following their disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
After ending the year 2023 in 61st place, the team has now dropped to 67th globally and has also fallen further down the rankings on the African continent.
Ghana now holds the 14th position in the CAF rankings, with Cape Verde, South Africa, and DR Congo surpassing the four-time AFCON winners.
These shifts in rankings come after the completion of the 2023 AFCON, which was hosted in Cote d’Ivoire. The host team, the Elephants, triumphed in their home campaign.
Ghana was eliminated in the group stage after only earning two points from their matches against Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.
Among the African teams, Côte d’Ivoire (39th, up 10) reaps the rewards of their continental success on home turf.
Despite making significant progress, Nigeria, the runners-up (28th, up 14), are outpaced by Angola (93rd, up 24), the team they defeated in the quarter-finals, who are the most improved side in the latest global rankings.
