Asante Kotoko emerged victorious in a stunning comeback to beat Nsoatreman 2-1 and clinch the J.A Kufuor Cup at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday, February 18, 2024.
The much-anticipated game got underway with both teams wearing matching yellow kits. However, in the 25th minute, the match was briefly paused to allow Kotoko to switch to white jerseys for better visibility and distinction.
Despite a goalless first half, the equilibrium was shattered when Abdul Rahman scored the opener for Nsoatreman.
After the halftime interval, Asante Kotoko amped up their efforts to draw level, and their persistence paid off when Ugandan striker Steven Mukwala found the back of the net in the 57th minute.
Nsoatreman had an opportunity to regain the lead from the penalty spot, but goalkeeper Frederick Asare thwarted Manaf Umar’s spot-kick.
In the 67th minute, Kotoko completed their turnaround as Peter Amidu capitalized on a precise pass from Richmond Lamptey to secure the winning goal.
The match, which was organized by the JAK Foundation, was a fitting tribute to the legacy of former Ghana President John Agyekum Kufuor, who served two terms from 2000 to 2008.
