Ivory Coast international Max Alain Gradel has shed light on the reasons behind his team’s victory at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Elephant emerged triumphant over the Super Eagles at the Stade Olympic Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan, securing their third continental title. They rallied from behind to defeat Nigeria 2-1 and claim the title on home soil on Sunday night.
William Troost-Ekong scored the opening goal in the first half of the highly anticipated match, giving the Super Eagles the lead heading into halftime.
Displaying a stellar performance, Ivory Coast fought back from a goal down to snatch a 2-1 victory over their opponents and secure the trophy.
Frank Kessie scored the equalizer before Sabastian Haller sealed the victory in the 81st minute.
“It was an amazing match between two top countries, so we are very happy to win this trophy because we wanted it more than everybody. Winning it at home makes it more special,” he said after the game.
Asked about the secret behind their success, he said, “It’s all about the spirit of the team because we nearly exited at the group stage after losing 4-0 to Equatorial Guinea. But then, we managed to pull the group together and become very strong.”
