Nigeria head coach, Jose Peseiro, has expressed his disappointment at his team’s performance in their match against Cote d’Ivoire during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Despite initially taking the lead through William Troost-Ekong’s goal in the first half, the Super Eagles eventually suffered a 2-1 defeat in Abidjan, as Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller scored for the host nation.
The loss dashed Nigeria’s hopes of clinching a fourth AFCON title, while Cote d’Ivoire secured their third.
In his post-match remarks, Peseiro admitted that his team failed to meet their usual standards against the host nation.
“Our team had been performing fantastically throughout the tournament, but today Cote d’Ivoire outperformed us,” he stated.
“They played very well, and we didn’t match our usual level. Our individual performances didn’t measure up to our previous standards. Congratulations to Cote d’Ivoire for their superior performance.”
“I also want to commend my players for their excellent efforts leading up to today. They were determined to bring the trophy home for Nigerians.”
Nigeria’s last AFCON victory dates back to 2013, and they had aimed to reclaim the trophy in Abidjan.
