Nigeria has advanced to the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON, marking their 16th appearance in the last four of the competition, tying with Egypt for the most semi-final appearances in the history of the tournament.
The Super Eagles secured their place in the semi-finals after defeating Angola 1-0, thanks to a goal from Ademola Lookman.
With this 16th appearance in the semi-finals out of 20 total appearances, Nigeria has equaled the record set by Egypt, who have also reached the last four 16 times in 26 appearances.
Behind Nigeria and Egypt, Ghana holds the third spot with 14 semi-finals played in 24 appearances, followed by Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire with 10 semi-final appearances each.
Despite their numerous appearances in the semi-finals, Nigeria has only lifted the trophy three times, while Egypt holds the record with 7 titles, followed by Cameroon with 5 and Ghana with 4.
Next, on Wednesday, 7th February 2024, José Peseiro and his team will take on South Africa in the semi-finals with hopes of making it to their 8th final of the competition, just one less than Ghana, two less than Egypt, and one more than Cameroon.
