Ghana captain, Andre Ayew, has issued a public apology for Ghana’s disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The apology comes eight days after Ghana’s elimination from the tournament.
Ayew took to his Instagram account to share a video message with his followers, expressing his regret for the team’s performance in the tournament.
In the video, Ayew, flanked by two Ghana flags, addressed Ghanaians and football fans, acknowledging the difficulty of the past few days.
“I would like to apologise for the results of the AFCON that we just exited. We should have done better. We should have gotten better results too,” Ayew said in the video.
Ghana’s disappointing run in the tournament saw them finish third in a group that included Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. The team’s 2-1 loss to Cape Verde, followed by back-to-back 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique, sealed their fate and led to their elimination from the competition.
This marks the second consecutive tournament in which the Black Stars have been knocked out in the group stage without securing a win, further extending the country’s wait for its fifth AFCON title to 42 years.
