CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, demands respect for eliminated football powerhouses at AFCON 2023
Amidst the disappointment of the early exits of football giants from the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), emphasized the importance of respecting the valiant efforts of the eliminated favorites and other countries.
Motsepe made these remarks during a press conference held on Friday at the Palais de la Culture in Treichville.
He urged the football community to acknowledge the significance of the elimination of countries such as Algeria, Ghana, and Tunisia in the tournament’s initial stages. Even the reigning African champion, Senegal, was eliminated as early as the round of 16. Despite these setbacks, Motsepe emphasized that these teams deserve unwavering respect.
“I think nations like Ghana, Egypt, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, and all the great nations should be respected for everything they have achieved,” he said.
Furthermore, Motsepe noted that smaller nations have invested a lot to be competitive in the tournament, highlighting the changing landscape and growing competitiveness of African football.
