Accra, the capital of Ghana, will be the proud host of the first-ever Black Star Marathon. Set to take place on July 27th, this event will provide an opportunity for both professional athletes and recreational runners to showcase their skills and experience the vibrancy of Accra’s spirit.
In honor of the great Pan-Africanist Marcus Mosiah Garvey, who believed in the greatness of Black people and their potential to achieve greatness through unity and institution-building, the Black Star Marathon aims to inspire and nurture the next generation of healthy, active athletes and citizens.
Organized by the Runathon Ghana Foundation, the Black Star Marathon will replace the initial Accra City Marathon and is expected to attract over 10,000 runners from around the world. The marathon will consist of long-distance running events, including a 42.2 km marathon for men and women over 18 years old, a 42.2 km wheelchair marathon, and a 10 km mass run/walk/jog for all participants.
Moreover, the event will not only offer runners the chance to improve their skills and compete with international athletes but will also provide resources for proper training, such as coaching, mentoring, nutrition, and equipment.
Dr. Eric Kwame Adae, a former elite Ghanaian long-distance runner and the Founder of Runathon Ghana, expressed the significance of the Black Star Marathon in providing international recognition to athletes and the opportunity to contribute to charitable causes aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The event also aims to promote health, fitness, and support for various social causes, including education, health, environment, and human rights. It welcomes support and sponsorship from corporations and organizations with similar missions.
Interested runners can register for the Black Star Marathon on the event’s website. Get ready to witness and be part of this thrilling and unforgettable experience in the vibrant capital city of Ghana.
