Former Ghana international Abdul Razak has expressed his disappointment with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) over the handling of the vacant Black Stars coaching position.
The position has been empty since the sacking of Chris Hughton following Ghana’s underwhelming performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This came after the team failed to progress past the group stage for the second consecutive tournament.
Even though the GFA announced a roadmap to appoint a new coach after Hughton’s dismissal, there has been no update and a deadline has already been set.
There are reports that former boss Otto Addo is the frontrunner for the job, with the Borussia Dortmund technical team member said to be interested in returning to the Black Stars.
In an interview with Akoma FM, Abdul Razak criticized the FA for the way they are handling the search for a new coach.
He expressed his concerns, saying, “If the FA knew they would appoint Otto Addo, there would be no need to open applications for the Black Stars coaching job. They treat the Black Stars’ coaching position as trash.”
Razak also raised doubts about the potential appointment of Addo, stating, “Otto Addo as Black Stars coach will be the most ineffective decision ever made by this FA.”
The former Asante Kotoko star called on the GFA to take the time to hire the best candidates available. He highlighted the lack of success during Addo’s previous tenure as a reason to consider other options for the role.
It is evident that there is growing discontent surrounding the FA’s handling of the coach appointment process, and it remains to be seen how the GFA will address these concerns and move forward with the hiring of a new coach for the Black Stars.
