The widow of Bart Starr, the first Super Bowl MVP, passed away this week at the age of 89.
Cherry Starr was married to the Green Bay Packers legend from 1954 until his death in 2019.
Their son, Bart Jr., confirmed her death to WBAY in Green Bay on Tuesday. He expressed his gratitude for having her in their lives for so long.
Rawhide Youth Services, the organization the Starrs joined in 1965, was the first to announce Cherry Starr’s death. Packers CEO Mark Murphy also provided a statement mourning her passing.
Cherry was known for supporting each new generation of quarterbacks, carrying on Bart’s legacy. Her generosity and kindness were appreciated by many in the community.
Cherry and Bart Starr moved to Green Bay after he was drafted by the Packers in 1956. Bart Starr went on to have a successful career, winning multiple NFL titles, being named NFL MVP, and having the NFL award named after him.
He was also inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The team retired his No. 15 jersey in 1973, making him one of the few players to receive that honor.
Cherry Starr’s passing is a loss felt by many in the football community. She will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering support for her husband’s legacy.
Our condolences go out to Bart Jr. and the entire Starr family during this difficult time.
