Renowned British Olympic champion David Wilkie has passed away at the age of 70 after a brave battle with cancer, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of swimming.
In a poignant statement, Wilkie’s family confirmed his passing, stating, “It is with great sadness that the family of David Wilkie MBE announce that he died peacefully surrounded by his family this morning, following his brave battle with cancer.”
Throughout his illustrious career, Wilkie secured three Olympic medals and three world titles, cementing his place as a swimming great.
Notably, he claimed victory in the 200m breaststroke event at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, shattering the existing record by over three seconds.
Retiring shortly after his Olympic success, Wilkie’s accomplishments were recognized with an MBE in 1977 for his contributions to the sport.
His son Adam fondly remembered him as a “truly wonderful man, father, and husband” known for his zest for life, kindness, and humor.
In a touching tribute, Team GB honored the late swimming icon for his extraordinary achievements, while fellow Olympian Sharron Davies expressed her sadness at his passing.
