John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has suggested a solution to combat the issue of unemployment among healthcare workers in Ghana, particularly nurses. His proposal involves sending these nurses abroad for employment opportunities rather than letting them remain jobless in the country.
While addressing student nurses during his visit to the Savannah Region, Mr Mahama emphasized the importance of creating job opportunities for nurses upon completing their education. He proposed the establishment of a specialized unit within the Ministry of Employment that would be responsible for recruiting qualified nurses for deployment overseas.
If elected, Mr Mahama has assured that he will work towards significantly reducing the current rate of unemployment in the country. He intends to increase the production of health workers and nurses, employing as many as possible in Ghana while also exploring agreements with other countries to send nurses to work on fixed contracts in international hospitals.
Under his plan, the Ministry of Employment would play a critical role in recruiting and ensuring the qualification standards of nurses for international deployment. By implementing this strategy, Mr Mahama aims to provide employment opportunities for healthcare workers and address the issue of unemployment within the healthcare sector.
