The labor unions are up in arms over the 15 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) imposed on electricity and are demanding its complete withdrawal. This follows a meeting held today at the Trades Union Congress (TUC) headquarters where the unions expressed their opposition to the government’s decision to implement the VAT on electricity, citing additional hardships on citizens.

Despite the government’s suspension of the VAT and intent for wider consultations on the matter, the unions remain skeptical and have declared their intention to proceed with a demonstration on February 13 unless the levy is completely scrapped. The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, reiterated the demand for the total withdrawal of the VAT issued by the government, expressing a willingness to engage in discussions with the government on the matter.

The labor unions have found support from other groups, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU). The PRO of the union, Abass Imoro, called for a complete withdrawal of the VAT policy and directed their members not to work on February 13 in solidarity with the labor unions.
