Timing of reshuffle won’t have an impact on the economy – Theo Acheampong

A recent cabinet reshuffle has sparked debate among political analysts regarding its potential impact on the country’s governance. One such analyst, Dr. Theo Acheampong, has expressed doubt that the reshuffle will address the economic and social challenges facing the nation.

Dr. Acheampong emphasized that many of the reshuffled ministers also hold parliamentary seats, which may divert their attention from their ministerial duties to focus on retaining their seats. He noted that juggling these responsibilities could lead to a lack of commitment to the work at hand.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Dr. Acheampong stated that the newly reshuffled cabinet is unlikely to make significant progress on the economic front in the next 10 months. He also pointed out that the current administration had seven years to implement reforms without much success, making it unlikely that a reshuffle will produce different results in such a short time frame.

The research analyst highlighted that the ministers’ personal political interests may compete with their national responsibilities, leading to a potential lack of focus on implementing necessary economic reforms. He also mentioned that it may take 3 to 6 months for new ministers to learn the ropes of their jobs.

On Wednesday, February 14, President Akufo-Addo announced a ministerial reshuffle in his government, relieving the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta of his duties and reassigning other ministers. This is the first major overhaul since assuming office in January 2017.

Overall, Dr. Acheampong’s assessment brings into question the potential impact of the recent cabinet reshuffle and raises concerns about the government’s ability to address pressing economic and social issues in the remaining months leading up to the next election.
