A 38-year-old sand winner has been sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court for stealing 37 cattle valued at GH₵37,000.00.
Ganiu Munkaila was found guilty of stealing and pleaded not guilty to abetment of commit crime. He was also acquitted of abetment of crime after a full trial.
The Court, presided over by Mrs Afia Owusuaa Appiah, convicted and sentenced Munkaila to two years imprisonment with hard labour.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Nyamekye, prosecuting, told the Court that Munkaila, a sand winner and supervisor of the complainant’s herdsman, was entrusted with GH₵37,000.00 by the businessman and cattle farmer to buy 37 cattle. However, Munkaila only handed over 21 cows to the herdsman instead of the agreed 58 cows.
Furthermore, Munkaila organized a group of individuals to rob the herdsman of six cattle in an attempt to cover his involvement in the initial theft.
After a failed attempt to convince the complainant that robbers had taken 60 cattle, Munkaila was eventually convicted and sentenced for his theft and involvement in the subsequent robbery.
