The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, also known as the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, has faced opposition from President Akufo-Addo. Despite this, the Minority Leader has made it clear that Parliament will override the President’s veto if he chooses not to sign the bill into law.

Dr. Ato Forson emphasized that Parliament will not be swayed from fulfilling its duties by any unconstitutional actions of President Akufo-Addo. The bill, which imposes charges on the consolidated fund, was classified as a private members bill.

During a media briefing, Dr. Ato Forson clarified that Parliament has the authority to override the President’s decision with a two-thirds majority vote if he does not sign the bill into law.

Meanwhile, an amendment to the bill has been approved by Parliament, imposing up to six months of a custodial sentence on individuals who aid, facilitate, encourage, or promote LGBTQ activities. The amendment proposed by co-sponsor of the bill Sam George aims to ensure strict punishment and compliance with the law once passed.

However, Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin opposes the amendment, advocating for a custodial sentence of no more than three months. He argued that imprisonment not only incurs state costs but that alternative options, such as fines and plea bargains, should be considered to avoid lengthy custodial sentences.

It is evident that the bill has sparked a heated debate in Parliament, with differing opinions on the appropriate punishment for those involved in promoting LGBTQ activities. The outcome of this debate will have a significant impact on the LGBTQ community in Ghana.
