A group of National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentarians have expressed their dissatisfaction with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent attempt to distance himself from the economic challenges facing Ghana. In a nationwide address, Dr. Bawumia appealed to Ghanaians to elect him as President in the upcoming elections, emphasizing his vision for better governance.

However, members of the Minority believe that Dr. Bawumia’s efforts to separate himself from the government’s economic management are insincere and untrustworthy. They pointed out that President Akufo-Addo had previously highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s expertise in managing the economy and insisted on his role in the government. They also emphasized that Dr. Bawumia had praised the work of the Economic Management Team, of which he is the chairperson.

The Minority members contend that Dr. Bawumia’s attempt to absolve himself from any responsibility for the state of the economy is unacceptable. They warned that his policies might contradict the NPP’s manifesto for the 2024 general elections, and that his attempt to distance himself from any blame should not be believed.

Additionally, the Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, criticized Dr. Bawumia’s claim that the Economic Management Team is only advisory, describing it as disgraceful and indicative of the Vice President’s lack of credibility. He also highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s power to remove public taxes, calling on him to demonstrate his commitment by taking action to address the current economic challenges.

The criticisms from the NDC Parliamentarians underscore the growing political tensions and the significance of economic management in the lead-up to the forthcoming general elections. As the Vice President’s role and responsibilities continue to be scrutinized, it remains to be seen how his actions and decisions will resonate with the Ghanaian electorate.
