The Volta Regional Police Command has officially confirmed the tragic death of an inmate in Akatsi. The deceased, identified as Simon Doeve, was facing murder charges and was in custody awaiting his court appearance on March 13. Shockingly, he took his own life by hanging himself in his cell before the scheduled court date.
Police investigations indicated that there was no sign of foul play, as there were no marks of assault on the deceased. After discovering the body, it was transferred to the Ho Teaching Hospital for preservation and an autopsy.
It was reported that Doeve had been remanded into police custody on February 12, but sadly, he chose to end his life on the same day. The incident came to light when the counter non-commissioned officer, Sergeant Gideon Ndsuga, noticed that the accused was missing from the cell during a routine check. Upon further inspection, he found Doeve hanging from the ceiling fan hook in the washroom.
The family of the deceased was promptly informed of the tragic turn of events by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Andrews Boadu Ekumah, the Regional Police Commander. Subsequently, the family was granted access to the cells to identify the body.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the mental health challenges that individuals facing incarceration may experience. It also highlights the importance of providing adequate support and monitoring for individuals in custody to prevent such tragic outcomes.
