High school students at the International Community School’s (ICS) Accra campus have taken a stand against illegal mining, urging major stakeholders to address the issue.

The detrimental effects of illegal mining on water bodies, forest reserves, and farmlands have prompted calls for urgent action from various stakeholders.

The Ghana Water Company Limited has resorted to water rationing in some areas due to water pollution at their treatment plants.

Additionally, medical experts have reported a rise in kidney diseases and birth defects in mining communities, emphasizing the severity of the situation.

To raise awareness about the issue, the ICS Performing Arts Society, led by Mr. Eugene Kwarteng and Ms. Betty Adu Gyamfi, staged a play titled ASAASE REMEMBERS, written by playwright Naaana Yaa Ofosuaa Acheampong.

The play uses the character of Kwaku Ananse to depict the harmful effects of illegal mining in Ghana. The management of ICS believes that producing such plays is a form of community advocacy and contributes to overall development.

In a bid to promote inclusivity, the play was performed at the Nyamedua Children’s Home, where the children were educated about the dangers of illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

The management of ICS, represented by Ms. Ophelia Akom, stressed the importance of collective efforts in addressing this pressing issue. Galamsey remains a significant threat to humanity, and every Ghanaian must be involved in finding solutions to combat this menace.
