Political Risk Analyst and Economist, Dr Theo Acheampong, has expressed concerns regarding the deteriorating standards of democracy in Ghana. Dr Acheampong pointed out that recent events suggest that the Executive arm, particularly the Presidency, may not be taking advice from Cabinet members and other advisory bodies seriously.

During a discussion on JoyNews’ Newsfile program on March 2, Dr Acheampong highlighted remarks made by President Akufo-Addo during his State of the Nation Address on February 27. President Akufo-Addo emphasized that, according to the Constitution, the Executive power of the state rests with the President, with other bodies such as Cabinet and Ministers acting in an advisory capacity.

Dr Acheampong interpreted the President’s statements to imply that all policy decisions in the country are ultimately approved by him. He raised concerns about the Imperial characteristics of the Presidency and the need for constitutional amendments to address this issue.

Dr Acheampong also criticized the President for seemingly disregarding the advice of experts and ministers, implying that the Presidency may have become too powerful and unresponsive to counsel.

In light of these observations, Dr Acheampong and his colleagues have described the current state of democracy in Ghana as a “No Action, Talk Only Nation.” He called for constitutional reforms to limit the unchecked powers of the Presidency and ensure that governance works in the best interest of all citizens.

Dr Acheampong’s remarks highlight a growing sentiment among some experts and observers about the need for a more balanced and accountable democratic system in Ghana. It remains to be seen how these concerns will be addressed and whether meaningful reforms will be implemented to strengthen democratic institutions in the country.
