In an recent address to the nation, Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia outlined his vision for the country and made a plea for his election into office.

However, this address has been met with criticism and skepticism, particularly from members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has suggested that Dr Bawumia used this address as a means to redeem his reputation before official campaigns and propaganda started.

Dr Asah-Asante commented on Dr Bawumia’s address on JoyFM’s TopStory, highlighting the Vice President’s attempt to distance himself from certain governmental policies, specifically the e-levy and VAT on electricity, which have been widely criticized by citizens.

It is clear that Dr Bawumia’s address was seen as a last opportunity for him to regain the trust of the public, especially in light of past statements he has made about previous governments and their impact on the current administration.

According to Dr Asah-Asante, the Vice President’s address aimed to make bold statements and disapprove of certain governmental policies in order to restore faith in his leadership.

This critique of Dr Bawumia’s address indicates that the Vice President is attempting to assert his control and disapproval of certain aspects of the government’s policies, with the hope of swaying public opinion and securing his place in the upcoming elections.
