The Office of the Attorney General (A-G) has provided clarification regarding President Akufo-Addo’s statement that the office has saved the state from paying judgment debts exceeding GH¢10 trillion. This statement was made during the 2024 State of the Nation Address in Parliament.
In response to inquiries about how these savings were achieved, the A-G’s office issued a statement signed by Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Godfred Yeboah Dame. The statement, dated March 1, listed several cases where significant savings had been made.
One of the cases mentioned was the China Jilin International Economic and Technical Cooperation vrs. The Attorney-General, where over GH₵400 million in the Ministry of Finance’s accounts was blocked to satisfy a judgment debt. Another case involved NDK Financial Services Ltd vrs. Ahamaan Enterprises & The Attorney-General, where the judgment debt was reduced from GH₵1,273,000,000 to GH₵14,000 by the Supreme Court.
Additionally, the A-G successfully challenged claims against the State in cases such as African Automobile Ltd vrs. Ministry of Employment & Manpower Development, Cassius Mining Ltd vrs. Government of the Republic of Ghana, and Beijing Everyway Traffic & Lighting vrs. Government of Ghana.
The A-G’s efforts also led to the dismissal of a claim by David Akpasera & 42 Ors vrs. The Attorney-General, seeking retirement benefits of over GH₵100 million.
These cases highlight the successful strategies employed by the A-G’s office to protect the state from exorbitant judgment debts and ensure fiscal prudence. The A-G’s prompt and strategic actions in these cases have undoubtedly saved the country significant financial resources.
