The Lebanese Community in Ghana recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of its Scholarship programme by launching an alumni network.
The Gala dinner was attended by notable personalities such as President Nana Akufo-Addo, Lebanese Ambassador Maher Kheir, Education Minister Dr Yaw Adutwum, MPs, members of the Diplomatic Corps, academia, musicians, and media personalities, as well as students.
Over the past decade, the scholarship program has supported more than 600 Ghanaian students in various disciplines, including Journalism, Law, Languages, and Performing Arts. Beneficiary schools include the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), the University of Ghana, KNUST, and the Ghana School of Law.
President Akufo-Addo commended the Lebanese community for their significant investment in supporting the government’s efforts to provide quality education in Ghana. He praised the community for positively impacting the lives of many Ghanaian students and being partners in societal change.
Lebanese Ambassador Maher Kheir emphasized the transformative power of education and lauded the community’s commitment to investing in the education sector for a brighter future. He acknowledged the strong bond created between Lebanon and Ghana through the scholarship program.
The ceremony also marked the launch of the Lebanese Scholarship Alumni Network (LESAN), which aims to undertake social and humanitarian projects for the development of society. A five-member executive committee was officially inducted into office, accompanied by the launch of the governing constitution.
The Lebanese Community donated a seed amount of GH¢100,000 to support the work of the alumni group as they begin their projects. The Ambassador encouraged former beneficiaries to strengthen relationships within the alumni network and pledged ongoing support from the community.
Overall, the Lebanese Scholarship Programme has made a significant impact on the lives of Ghanaian students and the development of the country. The initiative underscores the importance of education in empowering individuals and driving national progress.
