A vote for Bawumia is in reality just a third term for Akufo-Addo – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly opposed the idea of Ghanaians voting for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for the 2024 elections.

Fiifi Kwetey, the NDC’s General Secretary, expressed concerns over the prospect of Dr. Bawumia being elected as president, stating that it would essentially be handing power back to President Akufo-Addo for a third term.

Mr. Kwetey highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s involvement in the Akufo-Addo government, emphasizing that many key decisions were influenced by him. He criticized Dr. Bawumia’s promises to scrap nuisance taxes, asserting that such pledges are merely a guise to maintain the status quo.

Furthermore, Mr. Kwetey mentioned that Dr. Bawumia’s previous promises to reduce the tax burden, refrain from taxing mobile money wallets, and lower import duties on spare parts have not materialized, labeling them as lies.

The NDC General Secretary questioned Dr. Bawumia’s credibility and called for an apology to Ghanaians, expressing that he is not to be trusted and is unfit to lead the country. He urged Dr. Bawumia to campaign for the abolition of new taxes imposed now, rather than waiting until 2025.

In response, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia outlined his vision for the country as the NPP flagbearer in the upcoming elections. Promising to abolish the E-Levy and introduce policies to eliminate proposed VAT on electricity, emissions tax, and betting tax, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need for selfless leadership and bold solutions for the future.

However, Mr. Kwetey emphasized Dr. Bawumia’s “bigger character deficit,” questioning his trustworthiness and integrity. He called out the Vice President for “deliberately lying and conning the people of Ghana,” stating that he believes leaders can continue to deceive the public.

With tensions rising between the NDC and NPP, the political landscape in Ghana remains contentious as the 2024 elections draw closer. The NDC firmly opposes the idea of Dr. Bawumia leading the country, citing past unfulfilled promises and a lack of trust. Conversely, Dr. Bawumia continues to advocate for his vision and priorities, calling for support in the pursuit of a better future for Ghana.
