Nigerian-Canadian R&B and Afro-soul singer Ose, recently sat down for an exclusive interview with DJ Slim on Daybreak Hitz to discuss her music journey, inspirations, and creative process.
Ose, who kickstarted her music career during the coronavirus pandemic, has already released seven songs. She attributes her inspiration to her late grandmother, who had a band in Nigeria, and her mother, who introduced her to music at a young age through church choir practices.
“My late grandmother is a big inspiration for me. She had a band back in Nigeria, it’s like an incarnation. My mom is also a big inspiration. I grew up going with her to church choir practices, and that’s how I got introduced to music,” Ose shared.
Recounting the story of writing her first song, Ose mentioned, “I picked up my pen and paper and went to the washroom to write. I was like, ‘Okay, some of my best ideas come when I’m in the shower, so let me write in the washroom.’ And just like that, I wrote my first song.”
The talented singer also emphasized her love for collaboration, stating, “I’m very big on collaboration. I think that the biggest hits, some of our favorite songs, were not created by a single person.
I think that even to grow as a creative and as an artist, you need people in a room that are better than you and that are going to challenge you.”
Regarding competition, Ose sees it as a driving force to push herself to be better. “I never view competition in a toxic way.
If I see somebody that is better than me, in my head, I’m like, ‘I want to learn from you.’ I give myself a benchmark, and I’m like, ‘By this time, I gotta either be where you’re at or better than you,” she explained.
Fans can look forward to Ose’s latest track, “24 hours,” set to be released in March or April 2025.
