Universal Music Group has released a statement in response to Drake’s recent lawsuit against the company.
The Canadian musician filed a lawsuit accusing the company of defamation for allowing the release of Kendrick Lamar’s diss track, Not Like Us, which implied that Drake is a pedophile.
However, Universal Music Group has vehemently denied these claims, stating that they would never seek to harm the reputation of any artist, especially one as successful as Drake, with whom they have had a longstanding professional relationship.
The label also accused Drake of trying to silence Kendrick Lamar by taking their rap battle to the courts.
They highlighted Drake’s history of using Universal Music Group to distribute his music and engage in rap battles with other artists and suggested that he was now trying to use the legal system to stifle another artist’s creative expression.
In response to Drake’s claims that Universal had deliberately harmed his career, the label pointed out that they had made significant investments in Drake’s music, helping him achieve both commercial and financial success.
The statement further reiterated that Universal does not engage in defamation against any individual.
Drake’s lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, is the latest development in his ongoing feud with Kendrick Lamar.
The two artists engaged in a series of diss tracks last year, with Lamar’s Not Like Us containing strong allegations against Drake and his entourage.
Drake claimed that Universal knew the lyrics in Lamar’s song were false but continued to promote it for profit, suggesting a link between the controversy surrounding the track and a shooting incident at his Toronto mansion last year. Despite these claims, the lawsuit does not target Lamar himself but focuses solely on Universal Music Group for publishing and monetizing what Drake considers to be false and dangerous allegations.
The legal battle between Drake and Universal Music Group underscores the complexities of the music industry and the relationships between artists, labels, and creative expression.
