JamRok Bar and Event Centre has taken legal action against popular Ghanaian artiste, Mr. Drew, for failing to perform at their ‘Easter Dance Party with Mr. Drew’ event.
The event was scheduled to take place on April 1, 2024, in Asuogyaman.
Organizers of the event claim that Mr. Drew backed out of the performance even though he had already received 50% of his performance fee prior to the event.
In a press statement released on April 2, 2024, the management of JamRok stated that everything was in place for the event, but Mr. Drew decided not to perform without providing any explanation.
According to the statement, Mr. Drew had even confirmed his participation in the event by making a video after receiving his payment. On the day of the event, he checked into his hotel with his team around 3 pm, but later ignored calls from the organizers when it was time for him to take the stage.
Despite several attempts to reach Mr. Drew, including going to his hotel and finding him and his team asleep, they later discovered that he had left the event grounds and was heading back to Accra without performing. As a result, JamRok Bar and Event Centre is seeking legal action to recover the money paid to Mr. Drew for the event and to claim damages for the reputational harm caused.
In a writ of summons issued by the District Magistrate Court in Senchi on April 15, 2024, the venue is demanding the recovery of the payment made to Mr. Drew, totaling GH₵15,000.00, as well as special damages of GH₵36,511.00 for costs incurred in connection with the event.
Additionally, they are seeking general damages of GH₵200,000.00 for the severe damage caused to their brand due to the cancellation of the event.
