The President of the Ghana Music Alliance, Seven Xavier, has called on the government to make investments in record labels in Ghana. Drawing inspiration from the success of the K-pop genre in South Korea, he believes that supporting record labels will enhance the quality of music production in the country.

During his appearance on Joy FM’s CREATIVE INDUSTRY MANIFESTO series on Showbiz A-Z, Seven Xavier emphasized the need for better resourcing and financing of record labels in Ghana. He pointed out that many record labels lack the necessary resources to operate effectively and suggested that the government follow the South Korean model of supporting three major record labels.

“We can maybe look at the Korean model where the government resourced about three huge record labels, and basically gave them millions every and produce what we now call K pop artistes who have taken over the whole world,” he stated.

In addition to investing in record labels, Seven Xavier also proposed making music theory compulsory at the basic school level to provide a strong foundation for aspiring musicians. He recommended the introduction of Music Business courses at the tertiary level to improve professionalism in the Ghana music industry.

Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of having a multi-purpose performance arena, citing examples from Kigali and Lagos as facilities that have boosted the entertainment sectors in those countries. Seven Xavier also called for the improvement of collective management organisations in Ghana to better serve the creative industry.
