Amakye Dede to be honoured with TGMA lifetime achievement award

The Ghana Music Awards is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and this year, the prestigious Lifetime Achievement honor will be bestowed upon the legendary Highlife Maestro, Amakye Dede. With a musical career spanning over five decades, Amakye Dede’s contribution to the Ghanaian music industry is unparalleled.

Starting his journey with the renowned Kumapim Royals band led by Akwasi Ampofo Agyei (AAA), Amakye Dede later went on to establish his own music group, the Apollo High Kings. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the Apollo High Kings delivered numerous Highlife hits that solidified Amakye Dede’s status as a musical icon.

Having released twenty albums and a vast repertoire of songs, Amakye Dede has not only shaped the Highlife genre but also inspired generations of artists and music lovers. Known affectionately as “Iron Boy,” Amakye Dede has explored various musical styles such as Soca, Calypso, and Lovers Rock, incorporating them into the rich tapestry of Ghanaian music.

Some of his notable songs include “Iron Boy,” “Su fre wo Nyame,” “Asem to me a ka bi ma me,” “Dabidabi Ebeye Yie,” “Mmaa Pe sokoo,” and “Bebrebe Yi.” The 25th Telecel Ghana Music Awards, taking place on June 1, 2024, will pay homage to Amakye Dede’s artistry and celebrate his enduring commitment to his craft.
