Sir Rod Stewart has faced backlash from a German crowd while showing his support for Ukraine during a concert in Germany. The 79-year-old singer was booed and jeered as images of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy were displayed on screen at the Quarterback Immobilien Arena in Leipzig.
Despite the negative reaction, Sir Rod continued to perform his song “Rhythm Of My Heart,” which he has dedicated to Kyiv in recent shows, and saluted President Zelenskyy. He has been vocal about his support for Ukraine since Russia invaded the country in February 2022.
In a statement responding to the crowd’s reaction, Sir Rod mentioned his efforts to support the Ukrainian people, including providing supplies and offering a home in the UK to a Ukrainian family who fled the war. He also employs two Ukrainians as part of his touring crew.
The singer emphasized his continued support for Ukraine and called for Russian President Vladimir Putin to be stopped. Sir Rod has previously criticized Putin, calling him an “arsehole” during an interview with Sky News.
Despite the controversy in Leipzig, Sir Rod expressed his excitement about performing for German audiences and looks forward to his upcoming shows in Hamburg, Cologne, and Munich. He remains committed to standing with Ukraine and condemning Russia’s actions in the conflict.
