Renowned Nigerian actress, Rita Dominic, recently highlighted the importance of royalties for African actors during an interview with Joy FM’s Lexis Bill.
In the interview, Rita emphasized the need for actors to receive residuals to secure their financial well-being, particularly in their later years.
Rita acknowledged the hard work of filmmakers in various fields but stressed that residuals are crucial for improving the lives of actors. She pointed out that it would be beneficial for actors in Africa to receive royalties so that they are not struggling financially as they get older. Rita expressed concern over the financial challenges faced by some veteran actors in their old age, despite their contributions to major films that continue to generate revenue on platforms like YouTube.
The absence of proper systems for obtaining residuals from audiovisual content in most African film industries remains a recurring issue.
Rita drew attention to the challenges faced by actors in Nigeria and Ghana, where the actors’ guilds advocate for additional wages from various forms of licensing, including television airings and streaming.
During the conversation with Lexis Bill, Rita also emphasized the importance of financial planning and investment for actors. She encouraged her colleagues to manage their finances wisely, considering the unpredictable nature of the entertainment industry. Rita asserted her commitment to living within her means and suggested that actors should be prudent in their spending.
Rita Dominic, a prominent figure in the Nigerian film industry, shared her insights at the Women of Valour Summit in Ghana, organized by media personality Nana Aba Anamoah.
The summit featured influential women, including Ghanaian film producer Shirley Frimpong-Manso and South African broadcaster and actress Bonang Matheba.
