Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan caused a stir when he shared a video of himself dancing with his daughter, Eyiyemi, at the premiere of his new Netflix movie series called ‘Anikulapo Series: Rise of Spectre’.
The video sparked controversy as many believed the dance was inappropriate between a father and his teenage daughter.
During an interview with Saturday Beats, clinical psychologist John Eze pointed out that cultural norms and family dynamics play a significant role in determining what is considered appropriate. He mentioned that some cultures are more liberal than others, and the presence of the child’s mother also influences perceptions.
Another psychologist, who preferred to remain anonymous, discussed how evolving societal norms and generational differences challenge traditional boundaries. They mentioned that the daughter’s age and the raging hormones could make such gestures inappropriate from cultural, religious, and psychological perspectives.
Despite the criticism, Kunle Afolayan seemed unaffected and responded on Instagram with a message about the power of love. The incident has sparked discussions about changing norms and values, especially among the younger generation.
