Popular Nigerian socialite and businessman, Cubana Chief Priest, whose real name is Pascal Okechukwu, has found himself in legal trouble after being charged with banknote abuse.
Chief Priest recently appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to three counts of the alleged offense, which authorities claim took place during various social events where he was seen throwing money into the air.
This act of “spraying” money is a common practice at Nigerian celebrations, such as weddings. However, concerns have been raised about the mishandling of banknotes, which can be trampled upon when they fall to the ground.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria’s top anti-crime agency, has been cracking down on what they refer to as “all forms of naira abuse.” This effort has already led to consequences for other public figures, like internet personality Bobrisky, who recently received a prison sentence for a similar offense.
Chief Priest’s case is just one example of high-profile individuals facing legal repercussions for banknote-related misconduct.
Despite the charges, Chief Priest maintains his innocence, setting the stage for a legal battle over the controversial tradition of “spraying” money at festive gatherings.
