Ghanaian singer Portable has made a public plea for forgiveness after facing scrutiny for allegedly abusing the Naira, Nigeria’s currency.
The popular artist took to Instagram in a live video to ask the anti-graft agency Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to show leniency if they have evidence of him spraying money.
“I help a lot of people; after God is Government, Please forgive me if you have videos of me spraying money; no more spraying of money,” Portable emphasized during the live stream. He also showcased his generosity by offering to make transfers to his fans and those in need, encouraging them to open bank accounts for this purpose.
In his heartfelt appeal, Portable expressed regret over his actions and emphasized his desire to use his resources to spread love and build relationships. He clarified that his intention was not to deface the Naira but to support communities in need.
Portable’s plea comes in the midst of heightened scrutiny on celebrities for Naira abuse, with the recent arraignment of another popular figure, Cubana Chief Priest, on charges of violating the Central Bank Act of 2007. The EFCC has been vocal about its commitment to holding individuals accountable for this offence and warned the public against engaging in actions that violate the law.
This call for accountability follows the recent conviction of crossdresser Bobrisky, who was sentenced to six months in jail for Naira mutilation. The Federal High Court in Lagos handed down the verdict after Bobrisky pleaded guilty, with the judge emphasizing that the punishment serves as a deterrent to others.
