Nigeria’s cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, has landed in hot water with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly mutilating the Naira.
The EFCC arrested Bobrisky for spraying wads of Naira at the premiere of a movie in Lagos on March 24, 2024. This act violates Nigerian laws, which consider tampering with Naira notes as a punishable offence.
Further investigations revealed that this was not an isolated incident, as Bobrisky had allegedly committed the same offence at other events and parties. The EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the arrest, stating that Bobrisky is being held at the EFCC facility in Lagos pending legal proceedings.
“We are very serious about restoring the dignity of the Naira. Though our investigation is ongoing, he will definitely be charged to court soon,” Oyewale added.
This incident comes on the heels of Nigerian actress, Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, who was convicted for a similar offence in February 2023. She was sentenced to six months in prison or a N300,000 fine for spraying and stepping on new Naira notes at an event.
The EFCC is cracking down on individuals who disrespect the national currency, sending a clear message that such actions will not be tolerated.
