Justin Timberlake’s lawyer has issued a statement expressing the singer’s intention to vigorously defend himself after being arrested and charged with drink-driving in the US. The 43-year-old pop star was reportedly having dinner with friends on Long Island, New York before his arrest in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to reports, Timberlake was driving a BMW when he was pulled over in Sag Harbor, a wealthy village in the Hamptons, for failing to maintain his lane of travel and pause at a stop sign. A court document stated that an officer described Timberlake’s eyes as “bloodshot and glassy” and detected a strong smell of alcohol on his breath.
Despite Timberlake’s claim of only having one martini and following friends home, he refused to take a breath test. The Grammy winner was subsequently charged with a DWI (driving while intoxicated) misdemeanor and held overnight before being released.
Timberlake’s lawyer, Edward Burke Jr, stated, “I look forward to vigorously defending Mr Timberlake on these allegations. I will have a lot to say at the appropriate time but am currently awaiting full discovery from the District Attorney’s office.”
The next court date for Timberlake has been scheduled for 26 July, as confirmed by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. This incident comes as local media reported that the arresting officer failed to recognize Timberlake, leading to speculation about the potential impact on Timberlake’s upcoming tour.
Timberlake, known for hits like “SexyBack” and “Cry Me a River,” is also a successful actor who has starred in films such as “The Social Network” and “Friends with Benefits.” He is scheduled to appear for two dates in Chicago this week before continuing with shows across the US, Canada, and Europe from June to December.
