Ever since Sir Keir Starmer took over as Labour leader, many have questioned why he holds the title of “Sir”.

In the UK, being knighted is a prestigious honor bestowed by the monarchy. Sir Keir Starmer was knighted in 2014 for his exceptional services to law and criminal justice.

Before becoming the Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer served as the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) until 2013.

In his role, he oversaw the prosecution of several high-profile cases, including those of Stephen Lawrence’s killers and the case involving the death of Ian Tomlinson during the G20 protests.

Aside from these cases, Sir Keir also prosecuted Energy Secretary Chris Huhne and his former wife for perverting the course of justice. Huhne was the first British politician to resign over criminal charges and ultimately served an eight-month prison sentence for his actions.

Sir Keir Starmer’s knighthood recognizes his significant contributions to the legal and criminal justice system in the UK. Despite his reluctance to use the title, his work and achievements in the legal field have been widely acknowledged and celebrated.
