Sherri Papini, wife of Keith Papini, went missing back on November 2, 2016, while out on a run only to reappear 22 days later, bound and beaten, 150 miles away from home.

However, as investigations delved deeper, it was uncovered that Sherri had been the mastermind behind her own kidnapping.

Keith is known as Sherri Papini’s estranged husband. The couple, who tied the knot in 2009, has two young ones together.

It was exclusively revealed by the Sacramento Bee on April 22, 2022, that Keith had filed for divorce from Sherri just two days earlier after she pleaded guilty to charges of mail fraud and lying to a federal officer.

Keith expressed in court documents that the root of their problems began in November 2016 when Sherri left their children at a daycare and vanished.

The disappearance took a toll on him and their children emotionally and financially as he had to spend a considerable amount of time and money looking for her. He described the trauma the children went through as heartbreaking.

Sherri, initially claiming to have been kidnapped by two Hispanic women, was later found bound and beaten, leading investigators to unravel the truth behind her disappearance.

The FBI didn’t suspect Keith as they found no connection between him and Sherri’s deceit. Nonetheless, after a thorough examination, it was revealed that Sherri faked her own kidnapping to reunite with a past lover named Reyes.

On April 12, 2022, Sherri was charged with multiple counts of mail fraud and making false statements to the police.

She ultimately pleaded guilty to these charges. This led to her being sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay over $300,000 in restitution to various agencies. She expressed remorse in court and accepted full responsibility for her actions.

Sherri was released from prison in October 2023, six months ahead of schedule. She faced further legal battles when her demand for a portion of Keith’s insurance payout following a wildfire in 2021 was denied.

Keith revealed during this time that Sherri had accrued a substantial credit card debt, including a $3,200 purchase at Best Buy, to which Sherri plead the Fifth Amendment when questioned.

Sherri is now attempting to write two books, as revealed during a supervised visitation report in January 2024.

Her case will be revisited in the upcoming Hulu docuseries, Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini, which will be available for streaming on June 20, 2024.

Despite the twists and turns in this case, it serves as a reminder that the truth will eventually come to light, no matter how carefully one tries to conceal it.
