Karla López, the wife of Mets pitcher Jorge López, has been his rock throughout his career. The couple originally hails from Cayey, Puerto Rico, but their lives were forever changed when Hurricane Maria struck the island in 2017.
Jorge opened up to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about the devastating experience, recalling how the hurricane destroyed everything around them while they were at Karla’s parents’ house.
Despite the hardships they faced, Jorge and Karla share a beautiful son named Mikael Andrés López. Mikael has had to battle with Familial Mediterranean Fever and Crohn’s disease from a young age, causing him to spend a significant amount of time in hospitals. However, in 2021, Mikael underwent a successful bone marrow transplant and was finally able to leave the hospital.
The best moment for the López family came close to Father’s Day in 2022, when Mikael was able to support his father from the stands for the first time. It was a heartwarming experience for Jorge to have his son cheering him on during the game against the Cleveland Guardians in Baltimore.
Jorge López officially joined the New York Mets in 2023, signing a one-year contract with the team. His debut game with the Mets took place in 2024, where he unfortunately got ejected from the game after a dispute with a third base umpire. As he exited the field, Jorge threw his glove into the stands, showcasing his fiery passion for the game.
