Born on May 17, 1985, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ryan’s journey to stardom began in high school where he earned the nickname “Matty Ice.”

In a January 2017 ESPN interview, Ryan’s high school teammates recalled how his confidence and poise on the field led to the “Matty Ice” moniker. Described as the “Iceman” who meant business, Ryan’s nickname stuck throughout his career.

After spending one season with the Indianapolis Colts, Ryan announced his retirement from the NFL in April 2024. He signed a one-day contract with the Falcons to retire with the team that kickstarted his professional journey.

Off the field, Ryan met his wife, Sarah, while they were both attending Boston College. The couple tied the knot on April 8, 2011, and later welcomed twins in April 2018. Their family life is a testament to Ryan’s success on and off the field.
